Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your loan's interest rate compared to what you'd reasonably expect to earn investing, plus how much you value the certainty of debt reduction versus market returns, which aren't guaranteed. Many people split the difference — paying a bit extra on debt while also contributing something to savings or retirement — rather than going all-in on one or the other.

The avalanche method puts extra payments toward the loan with the highest interest rate first, which minimizes total interest paid over time. The snowball method puts extra payments toward the smallest balance first, which can build motivation through quicker wins even though it usually costs a bit more in total interest.

Watch for anyone asking for an upfront fee to enroll you in a federal program, promising immediate forgiveness or debt cancellation regardless of your situation, asking for your Federal Student Aid ID or password, or pressuring you to act immediately. Legitimate federal programs are free to apply for directly through your servicer or studentaid.gov.

Check whether the rate is fixed or variable, what the total loan term and payment will be, whether there's a cosigner release option if someone cosigned, and what protections (if any) exist for job loss or economic hardship, since private refinance loans rarely offer the flexibility federal loans do. Understand clearly that refinancing federal loans is irreversible — you can't convert a private loan back to a federal one.

If you're already considering bankruptcy for other debts, or your situation is severe enough that undue hardship might genuinely apply, an attorney experienced specifically with student loan discharge cases is worth consulting, since the standard and process vary somewhat by jurisdiction. For most borrowers with manageable, if stressful, debt, income-driven repayment or forgiveness programs are worth exhausting first.
