FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Graduate students generally aren't eligible for subsidized federal loans, so interest accrues from disbursement, and graduate borrowers can also access Grad PLUS loans, which have higher borrowing limits but typically higher interest rates than undergraduate Direct Loans. It's worth comparing these against any funded assistantships or fellowships your program offers.

That depends heavily on the field — some graduate degrees lead to meaningfully higher earnings that justify the added borrowing, while others don't move the needle much on income. It helps to research typical starting salaries and debt loads for your specific program, not just the field in general, before committing.

Trade and vocational programs are typically shorter and less expensive than a four-year degree, often taking months to two years rather than four-plus years, which usually means less debt and a faster path to earning. Many skilled trades also offer strong pay without requiring a bachelor's degree at all.

Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) scholarships can cover some or all tuition, plus provide a monthly stipend and money for books, in exchange for a service commitment in the military after graduation, usually as a commissioned officer. Requirements and scholarship amounts vary by branch and by school.

Ask about job placement rates and average starting salaries for graduates, whether the credential is recognized by employers in that field, the total cost including any financing fees, and what happens if you don't complete the program. A program confident in its outcomes should be able to share this data.
