FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Broadly: adjusting your repayment plan (like switching to income-driven repayment), pausing payments temporarily (deferment or forbearance), restructuring your debt (consolidation or refinancing), pursuing forgiveness if you qualify, or negotiating directly with a private lender. Each addresses a different kind of problem, so it helps to be clear on whether the issue is short-term or long-term before picking one.

Be cautious — most legitimate options, like income-driven repayment, consolidation, or forgiveness applications, are free to do yourself directly through your servicer or studentaid.gov. Companies that charge upfront fees for help enrolling you in these free federal programs are a red flag worth avoiding.

The avalanche method puts extra payments toward the loan with the highest interest rate first, which minimizes total interest paid over time. The snowball method puts extra payments toward the smallest balance first, which can build motivation through quicker wins even though it usually costs a bit more in total interest.

Watch for anyone asking for an upfront fee to enroll you in a federal program, promising immediate forgiveness or debt cancellation regardless of your situation, asking for your Federal Student Aid ID or password, or pressuring you to act immediately. Legitimate federal programs are free to apply for directly through your servicer or studentaid.gov.

It's possible but difficult — student loans (federal and most private) require proving undue hardship through a separate legal process within the bankruptcy case, a standard that's historically been hard to meet, though some courts have applied it somewhat more flexibly in recent years. It's generally treated as a last-resort path rather than a routine option.
