FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Ask about job placement rates and average starting salaries for graduates, whether the credential is recognized by employers in that field, the total cost including any financing fees, and what happens if you don't complete the program. A program confident in its outcomes should be able to share this data.

It depends on the program's accreditation and length — many certificate programs at accredited schools do qualify for federal aid, but many bootcamps and unaccredited short courses don't, which pushes students toward private loans, income-share agreements, or paying out of pocket. Always check a program's federal aid eligibility before enrolling if you're counting on it.

Options include starting at a lower-cost community college before transferring, taking AP, IB, or dual-enrollment credit in high school to shave off semesters, living at home or with roommates instead of alone, buying used or renting textbooks, and finishing in four years rather than five or more to avoid extra tuition and living costs.

Start with your school's financial aid office, which often knows about local and institutional awards that don't show up in national databases, then check free search tools, your state's higher education agency, and organizations tied to your field of study, employer, community group, or background. Be wary of any scholarship that asks you to pay a fee to apply.

Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) scholarships can cover some or all tuition, plus provide a monthly stipend and money for books, in exchange for a service commitment in the military after graduation, usually as a commissioned officer. Requirements and scholarship amounts vary by branch and by school.
