Frequently Asked Questions

Checking every few months is generally enough while you're in school, and more often — monthly — once you're in repayment, so you can catch billing errors, confirm autopay is working, and see how your balance is trending. Set a calendar reminder if it's not already part of your routine.

Keep a single record — a spreadsheet or note — listing each loan's servicer, balance, interest rate, and due date, and log into the National Student Loan Data System (via studentaid.gov) periodically to confirm it matches your federal loan history. For private loans, check your credit report periodically to make sure nothing is missing or mislabeled.

Usually, but not always — a cheaper school with a lower graduation rate or fewer transferable credits can end up costing more in extra semesters. It's worth looking at a school's actual graduation timelines and average student debt at graduation, not just its sticker price, when comparing options.

You generally have to indicate interest on the FAFSA and then it gets included in your aid offer if you qualify and funding is available, but being offered work-study doesn't guarantee a job — you typically still need to search and apply for open positions on campus, similar to a normal job hunt.

They're separate debts, but credit card interest rates are typically much higher than student loan rates, so credit card balances that carry over month to month tend to cost far more over time. Prioritizing paying off credit cards in full, even while student loans sit at a lower, fixed rate, is usually the more expensive debt to avoid carrying.
